Individuals residing in Japan on a student visa may undertake part-time work within Japan upon receiving permission from the Immigration Bureau.
This is referred to as “activity outside the scope of status of residence”.
Working part-time without permission carries severe penalties.
Permission for “activity outside the scope of status of residence”can be obtained at a Japanese airport upon arrival in Japan.
Working conditions
Upon obtaining permission for “Activities Outside the Scope of Status of Residence”,
you may work part-time for up to 28 hours per week.
As an exception, during the following extended holiday periods only,
you may work up to 8 hours per day (40 hours per week).
– Spring break (approximately two weeks from late March to early April) – Summer break (approximately ten days in mid-August) – Winter break (approximately two weeks towards the end of the year)
*Golden Week is excluded. *Work related to adult entertainment establishments or escort services is prohibited. *If you withdraw from or complete the ALA programme, you will not be permitted to work part-time.
