According to the “Survey on the Living Conditions of Privately Funded International Students in the 2021 Academic Year” conducted by the Japan Student Services Organisation in September 2022,
the average monthly income earned by international students enrolled in Japanese language schools from part-time work
was ¥157,000.
Meanwhile, the average monthly tuition fees at Japanese language institutions in Tokyo ranged from ¥60,000 to ¥90,000.
Combining living expenses and tuition fees totals between ¥161,000 and ¥191,000.
Therefore, it is evident that wages from part-time work alone after arriving in Japan are insufficient to cover these costs.
